This afternoon in the alcohol-free sunshine of Braddon the ACT’s freshly annointed Fraser MP Dr Andrew Leigh officially opened his electoral office with the assistance of Senator Penny Wong and a veritable who’s who of Canberra Labor (sans Canberra MP Gai Brodtmann, who, I’m reliably informed, was doing something terribly important up at Parliament and couldn’t make it).

Open now, he told the crowd of party faithful, for three months, or 12 weeks if you consider he’s spent a bit of time up at the big house on the grassy green hill, Dr Leigh thanked his crack campaign and office team for their support, lamented the loss of his office manager to Peter Garrett and told Wong to stay away from the staff he had left.

In her address Wong, who lives in Leigh’s electorate when she’s in Canberra, drew his maiden speech for inspiration, pointing to his comments on multiculturalism and family.

Leigh, who went to school in Aceh, spoke in Parliament about being the only white kid at school, Wong said it’s a good thing to know what that means to society.

Wong said Leigh’s grandparents, who he quoted as saying “a life of serving other is a life well lived”, were Grade A Labor material.

Also she said his CV was “ridiculous” and welcomed his contributions to the Party and Parliament.

Then she cut the ribbon, chastised his throwing six Christmas parties and refused his offer of a glass of champagne.

Andrew Leigh’s electoral office can be found at number one Torrens Street, Braddon, for all your Fraser needs.
