Fun Run: my legs hurt

Today is a day for celebration and jubulation, this morning at 7.20am I completed the final training session for the Canberra Times Fun Run on Sunday. Hoorah!

For two months I have risen at the crack of dawn twice a week to lunge, squat, sprint and jog, to run distances no one thought I could.

I’ve even taken to running with other people on the days I don’t do organised training. How amazing is that?

There have been setbacks, I admit. There were two weeks where, due to ill health and partying in Sydney I could not make it to training.

The election/running combination nearly killed me with its early starts and late nights (note to self: red wine at the Young Women’s Christian Association Forum + Mt Majura jog before breakfast is not a good combination).

Then there was the raging storm last weekend. I got up at 5.45am, looked out the window at the gale force winds and pouring precipitation, made the conscious choice to text my running buddies “Not today” and went back to bed.

I don’t regret it. That sleep was good.

My problem now is not being motivated to run, I willingly traverse space and time through rhythmic foot movements in sneakers as long as conditions are clement, my problem is that I have become addicted to it.

Seriously.

I need to do exercise and I need to do it often. You see, once my body became used to regular exercise, if I skipped a couple of days I got aggitated and my muscles ached.

After the storm cleared over the weekend I threw myself in a suburban sprint down the street to the shops, the school and back and I WAS SO HAPPY. It was disgusting.

Now there’s three days to go till the Fun Run. I’ve been told to steer clear of booze and coffee in the lead up and drink lots of water and eat healthy food – this is the hardest part for me, I love cake. In any form. And dumplings.

Today was the end of my official training, tomorrow I will run up Mt Majura, Friday I will probably to a shorter run, maybe at the lake, rest on Saturday and SUNDAY IS THE BIG DAY.

The best part about it is the charity my Wonk team picked was response we had from the Brisbane based Hear and Say Centre that helps deaf children hear and speak through cochlear implants and speech therapy.

We’ve already hit our target of raising $1000 and they’re sending us baseball caps to wear in the run, but I have to say the lovely emails they’ve sent make me feel really glad I picked such a small charity.

Go here to donate to the ACT Wonks team and remember, my legs hurt.

The local fiano that punches above its weight

"The Collector fiano was perfect to drink on a hot day: crisp, textural and with an element of preserved lemon. It is not a low-alcohol wine with a nudge above 13 per cent alcohol by volume," writes wine columnist RICHARD CALVER.
