Lundy inducted WIC patron

In the sunny summer afternoon yesterday a crowd of 60 odd ladies of ICT and a couple of gents gathered for high tea at the Lobby in the Parliamentary Triangle to see Senator Kate Lundy inducted as a patron for the non-profit group Women in Information and Communications.

Aiming to bring geek girls together to champion women in the their industry, the Canberra based group WIC mostly holds monthly meet up breakfasts – this was their first afternoon event.

“It’s not to get more women into ICT, but to keep them there,” Vice President Mia Horrigan says.

“The idea is networking really, because some women are the only females in their IT department and this might be the only chance to talk shop with others in their field.”

It should come as no surprise in the capital that the ladies munching scones and downing champagne come from both the public and private sector, with the notable presence of IT movers and shakers at the high end of Government.

And Gov 2.0 was the order of the day with Lundy dishing up a dissertation called “Location” looking at the possibilities of geo-spatial data and governance in Australia.

In simple terms – the idea of a one stop page for citizen services online that uses your location to display relevant service information. Ie where your nearest centre link is and the next bus leaving.

Bringing the Government to the internet where the people are has been one of Lundy’s pet projects and given the audience it was clearly appropriate discourse.
