A first bite of Weihnachtsmarkt in Canberra

For the first time, Canberrans are able to celebrate Christmas in the spirit of Europe’s famous “Weihnachtsmarkt “.

Weihnachtsmarkt, in German, is an open market associated with the celebration of Christmas.

Originating in Germany and Austria, Weihnachtsmarkts can date back to the late Middle Ages, and have developed into popular tourist attractions in many European cities over the years.

Now it is Canberra’s turn to embrace Weihnachtsmarkt. For three days only, Friday December 9 – Sunday December 11 (12-9pm), visitors can indulge themselves in everything festive at the Capital’s inaugural Christmas Markets at Exhibition Park.

The markets offer an incredible array of food and handicraft stalls in a relaxed Christmas atmosphere.

All the ingredients to make the perfect Christmas menu will be on sale: chickens, hams, turkeys and coast-fresh seafood; gingerbread, Christmas puddings and brandy sauce; pre-prepared stuffings and condiments.

Fresh Christmas trees will also be available; and family photos with Aussie Santa.

“But it’s more than a one-stop Christmas shop,” said organiser Susan Anderson.

“Actually it’s more like a carnival with singers, dancers, painted faces and much more. We’ve even got visitors from NSW.”
