Baby born in traffic jam

CAUGHT in peak hour traffic on the Gungahlin Drive extension, Sarah Yap had no choice but to give birth to her daughter Audrey in the front seat of her car.

Sarah, who sent through these pictures to “CityNews”  of her beautiful baby girl, woke at 7.15am on Friday, August 12, in pain.

“I could barely stand up properly due to the pain and [partner] Will was still at least 15 minutes away from home. I got in the car and asked my mum to drive me to the hospital.

“We got stuck in peak hour morning traffic along the Gunghalin Drive extension at around 8am and by this time the contractions were coming every minute. At this stage, I was in a lot of distress, counting through each of the contractions at 10,000 decibels.”

Sarah gave birth to her baby on Haydon Drive.

“Audrey was born in the front seat of my Toyota Yaris sedan at approximately  8.20am; she basically slid out and cried straight away, I held her to my chest, and my mum pulled up at emergency dept 20seconds later,” she said.

“I got out of the car and a number of medical staff ran to me. I was put in a wheelchair and taken to the delivery ward where baby’s umbilical cord was cut, my placenta delivered and various other checks taken.”
