Beware the evil queens

Arts in the city

Centrepiece Theatre's production of John Kolvenbach's play "Love Song".
• CANBERRA abounds in wicked, evil queens, with “The Snow Queen” at Theatre 3 and Ickle Pickle Productions’ “Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs” at Belconnen Theatre. It’s another panto by Canberra writer Peter McDonald, who depicts the Seven Dwarfs grumbling about the effect of a Great, Big Tax on their mining activities. Wicked Queen? Could McDonald and director Justin Watson be drawing a political parallel? October 5-15. Bookings to 6262 6977.

• CENTREPEICE Theatre is back on stage, this time in The Q’s annual season, in John Kolvenbach’s play “Love Song”, part witty comedy and part romantic love story. Jordan Best directs an all-star cast of Jim Adamik, Sophie Benassi, Benjamin Crowley, Jenna Roberts and Tim Sekuless. October 5-15. Bookings to 6285 6290 or www.theq.net.au

• SCULPTOR Peter Corlett has planned to confound would-be vandals of  Ben Chifley’s pipe in his Chifley/Curtin work, recently unveiled by PM Julia Gillard near the Archives. It seems male protuberances, such as pipes are favourite targets of vandals, so Corlett has produced several spares made of a tougher material than bronze and artsACT has stashed them away in its Civic offices.

• TUGGERANONG Arts Centre, Ukelyptus and Firefly are staging the inaugural Canberra Ukulele Festival of Fun, billed as “the biggest gathering of ukulele players ever”. That’s quite a claim. It’s on October 1 from 9.30am-5pm at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, bookings to 6293 1443 or tickets at the door.

CONGRATULATIONS to winners in the Canberra Potters’ Society Members’ Exhibition, at Watson Arts Centre until October 10. The premier prize, the Doug Alexander award, went to Maryke Henderson for her exhibit “Forest”, while other awards went to Moraig McKenna, Erin Kocaj, Zoë Slee, Ingrid Adler, Suzanne Oakman and Chris Harman. Merit awards were presented to Debra Boyd-Goggin, Sylvia Marris, Chris Harford, Chris Harman and Verney Burness.

• THE newish Canberra Concerto Orchestra, founded by Charlotte Winslade, will perform Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Symphony No. 5 under the baton of Mark Shiell with violin soloist Roy Theaker. It’s  at Albert Hall, 3pm, October 2.

• DJUMBUNJI Press Printmaking Centre is in Cairns and its artists include Billy Missi, Brian Robinson and Joel Sam. You can see some of their beautiful works at Nomad Art Gallery, Palmerston Lane, Manuka, until October 8.
