Call for memorial input

THE National Capital Authority has today asked Australians what is important to them about a new workers’ memorial to be developed in Canberra.

As part of the 2011-12 Budget, the Federal Government announced $3.6m in funding to establish a national memorial to honour and pay tribute to all working Australians who have died as a result of a work-related accident, incident and disease.

The NCA, on behalf of the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, will oversee a national design competition for the memorial in the second half of 2011.

National Capital Authority chief executive, Gary Rake said the new memorial would be established in Kings Park over the next 18 months.

“The memorial is to be of a human scale located in a screened area of Kings Park.  The memorial will provide opportunity for personal reflection as well as formal commemorative events,” Mr Rake said.

“Public comments received during the consultation period will be considered in preparing the competition guidance materials.”

A drop-in session will be held in Kings Park, on the site of the proposed memorial, on Sunday July 24 between 2pm to 3pm.
