Caring for kittens

RSPCA ACT are recruiting new carers to be part of their kitten foster care program.

Tonight, the organisation will accept a cheque from the Capital Region Community Foundation (GreaterGood) of behalf of the late Jon Prance, at an information event for new kitten foster carers.

“RSPCA relied heavily on the support of the community and bequests of this nature, to allow them to continue to provide their programs and services, and kitten season certainly impacted on their resources, both financial and staffing resources,” RSPCA ACT CEO Michael Linke said.

People attending the evening will receive information about how to care for all ages of kittens, including the intensive care that is required for neo-natal kittens, who come to the shelter without their mothers.

“Already, we have had numerous kittens coming to the shelter without their mothers, and they require two to three hourly feeding and ongoing monitoring of their health,” he said.

“Whilst we continue to educate the community of the importance of desexing, we continue to see thousands of kittens every year. Many arrive without their mother, despite our efforts to encourage the litter coming with their mother, so they have a greater opportunity for survival.”
