Chimneys face the future

ALL that remains of the Canberra Services Club building at Manuka are two defiant chimneys after fire destroyed the historic club in April.

The site has been cleared for rebuilding, but at the time club president Matthew Harvey described it as “heart wrenching” to see the club go up in smoke and said that irreplaceable war memorabilia was lost in the blaze.

“There’s a lot of things that were donated that to the people who donated it and to the people who identify with those things, it’s a big loss,” he said.

The timber building was originally built from public subscription as a rest hut to provide comforts for local service personnel during World War II.
