Dinner to aid orangutans

Orangutans from Sumatra.

A FUNDRAISING dinner to raise money for the conservation of orangutans will be held next week with more than $3000 worth of items up for auction.

The Australia Orangutan Project’s Jazzin’ for Rangas will not only include the auction – that includes zoo packs, jewellery from Bilk Gallery and a framed picture of a baby orangutan signed by Dr Galdikas (the “Jane Goodall of orangutans”) – but a three-course dinner, entertainment from local jazz band “Mary Violet” and presentations from Dr Andrew Leigh MP on the Australian Government’s actions to conserve the Indonesian forests and the ANU’s Professor Colin Groves will talk about the plight of the orangutan.

All money raised will go to conservation, protection and education projects in Indonesia.  According to the AOP, Sumatran orangutans are critically endangered (approximately 6000 left in the wild) and Borneo orangutans are endangered (approximately 50000 left).  They could possibly be extinct within the next five to 10 years.

The AOP is a not for profit organisation and is Australia’s contribution to international efforts to save the great apes.

Jazzin’ for Rangas at the Canberra Club on Friday November 11.
