Fatigue causing crashes in the capital

DRIVER fatigue is one of the major causes of crashes in the ACT according to a study commissioned by NRMA/ACT Road Safety Trust.

The study, entitled “Improving the identification of fatigue-related crashes in the Australian Capital Territory”, surveyed NSW and ACT residents and questioned their experience of fatigue and their involvement in fatigue-related crashes and incidents.

Results included: more ACT drivers than NSW drivers reported feelings of tiredness when they drove; more ACT drivers continued to drive after feeling sleepy than NSW drivers; about one driver in six reported that crashes or close calls had occurred close to their intended destination; and around half the crashes and half the close calls for the ACT drivers occurred when they had left the ACT and were driving in NSW.

Four in 10 had less than seven hours sleep a day during an ordinary working week and two thirds said they were tired occasionally or frequently, even after a full night’s sleep.

The study found almost 20 per cent of incidents occurred during holiday travel and 20 per cent less then five kilometres from the intended destination.
