Lurline Chamber Orchestra will perform as part of "Music at The Gallery".

INTIALLY a venue for gallery openings and glittering night-time dinners, the National Gallery of Australia’s Gandel Hall is the venue for a winter-warming initiative, “Music at The Gallery”.

Emma Ayers, from ABC Classic FM, will be hosting a series of classical concerts. Taking no chances in programming, the gallery has placed opera prominently on the list, with soprano Amelia Farrugia opening the series on July 3 with the great hits of Dame Nellie Melba and tenor Rosario La Spina closing it on July 31 with the romantic arias for which he has become known and a few Neapolitan songs, too.

In between,  the Lurline Chamber Orchestra, directed by Marie and  Angela Lindsay, will test the acoustics of the hall with orchestral classics from Handel, Bach, Haydn and Mozart on July 17. After this, on July 24, one-time child prodigy and now 28-year-old virtuoso, Simon Tedeschi, now living in New York, will demonstrate his equal skill in the classics and jazz with works by Schubert, Liszt, Debussy, Rachmaninoff and Gershwin.

It’s an all-star cast playing all-star musical works that should please a wide range of audiences.

“Music at The Gallery” , 2pm each day in the NGA’s  Gandel Hall on July 3, 17, 24 and 31. Bookings to 6240 6528 or membership@nga.gov.au
