Gay ceremonies to defy ban

A CELEBRANT will defy the law and conduct lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex marriage ceremonies on Sunday as part of rally marking the seventh anniversary of the federal marriage ban.

The rally, to be held in Petrie Plaza, will include a celebrant from the Centre for Progressive Religious Thought who will be conducting the ceremonies and couples are invited to participate.

Equal Love Canberra organiser Ridah Hassan said the groups were demanding Labor adopt a policy of full marriage equality at their national conference in December.

“We won’t accept civil unions or a conscience vote,” she said. “Anything less than a binding position for full marriage equality would maintain the current discriminatory legislation, introduced by John Howard.

“Given that [Prime Minister] Julia Gillard opposes marriage equality, we have to keep putting pressure on the Government by taking to the streets in the lead up to the ALP conference.”

A national convergence will be held on December 3 outside the ALP national conference in Sydney, starting in Hyde Park North.

Organisers hope the national convergence will be one of the biggest and most significant protests for LGBTI rights in Australian history.
