Gift ball bounces into town

IT was a simply drawn circle on a whiteboard that gave cousins, Dejan Andrevski and Darko Andreski, the idea for Gift a Ball.

“These balls are bridging the gap between gifts and gift cards,” says Dejan.

The cousins have a little graphic design business outside their weekly jobs called Canberra Design House.

“We were thinking of what we could give to our clients mainly, but we wanted to be friendly with our clients and wanted to thank them.

“We did champagne and gift cards, chocolates and all that sort of stuff and it was all seemed too boring.

“So once we came up with this idea, it really stood out. It’s not another gift card.”

Darko says: “The main thing for us was how to reach out to our clients and thank them and how to be unique in that approach.

“I remember Dejan drawing a ball on our whiteboard and saying ‘this is it’.”

The project was six months in development before they launched two weeks ago.

Gift a Ball offers five different greetings on five different coloured balls.

Greetings are: “Happy Birthday, Have a ball”, “Sorry I dropped the ball”, “Congrats! All round”, “You’re so loveaball!” and “Bounce back soon!”.

“We’ve tried to make messages that can attract any situations, birthdays, congratulations, get-well-soons,” Dejan says.

“We take orders over the internet, we directly address the ball, we stick stamps to the ball and it gets delivered like that.

“So we are really trying to bring out the ‘wow’ factor.”

Dejan, 25, and Darko, 23, are born and bred Canberrans. Dejan completed his masters in finance at ANU and Darko a degree in graphic design at University of Canberra.

Most recently Dejan was named on business website, Start Up Smart’s top 25 young entrepreneur Future Maker’s list.

At this stage, Gift a Ball is an “after 5pm” job with both cousins working full-time jobs during the day.

And for the future?

“We’ve gotten some great feedback from our customers,” Darko says.

“At this point we are not able to, but in the future we’ll look into customising the greetings and making them more personal.”
