Home dreams to nightmares

Affordable housing is still the number one cause for concern for Canberrans, according to Grey Canberra’s Eye on Canberra survey.

The survey is conducted as part of the annual Eye on Australia survey and in both studies housing affordability ranked as the number one concern for Canberrans and the nation.

Grey Canberra general manager Warren Apps said that while overall satisfaction with life is on the rise in Canberra, affordable housing is our biggest worry and there’s little confidence in the future.

“Affordable housing is the issue most likely to keep us awake at night with 39 per cent of Canberrans and 45 per cent of Australians sayings it’s a major concern” he says.

“Leading the worried pack are the younger generations, with 53 per cent of Gen Y and 55 per cent of Gen X across Australia scoring housing affordability between 8 and 10 on the ‘worry scale’.”

The concern is so great that people expect the family structure to change, with children living with their parents for even longer.

“In 10 years’ time, 72 per cent of Canberrans think that children will be living at home longer, and 27 per cent of us even think that married couples could be living with their parents,” he says.

“Judging from the results, it seems like the great Australian dream of owning your own home is turning into a nightmare for a majority of people.”
