Ivana heads into the universe

Miss Universe Australia aspirant Ivana Vrbenski... wants to “show the rest of Australia what Canberra is capable of”.

A FORMER Mackillop Catholic College student is representing the ACT in the Miss Universe Australia competition.

A beauty pageant novice, Ivana Vrbenski will compete in the national finals in Melbourne on Thursday, July 7.
To be a beauty queen, the requirements are clear.
“It was a tough process,” Ivana says. “The girls that got through to the registration round were required to wear a cocktail dress, have heels to match the dress, have nails painted clear or French and have hair and make-up done in a glamorous style.”
Ivana is taking the opportunity to showcase Canberra in the evening-wear section of the competition, with a frock from local designer Jenifer Apps.
“I wanted to get behind the local talent and show the rest of Australia what Canberra is capable of,” she says.
“The dress I will be wearing is from Jenifer Aniela’s ‘Fantasy’ collection. It is just amazing and I cannot wait to wear it.”
While the competition is fierce with the other 30 finalists, Ivana remains positive.
“So far, the people I have met while in this competition have been extremely nice. All the girls are competing for the same thing, so there is that rivalry present, but everyone has been respectful.”
Ivana moved to Sydney late last year to pursue a career in acting and modelling and is completing a part-time acting course at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts).
“All my family and friends are still in Canberra and I have found myself coming back on a monthly basis to catch up with everyone,” she says.
Miss Universe Australia is a national beauty pageant that selects a representative to go to the international Miss Universe pageant, which is owned by Donald Trump and NBC.
There has been two Miss Universe title holders from Australia: Kerry-Ann Wells in 1972 and Jennifer Hawkins in 2004.
