KARA Potter has been named the winner of Lifeline Canberra’s Women of Spirit award.
Ms Potter, a mother-of-three, was up against 11 other contestants in the search for “women who have faced adversity in their life, and in overcoming it, displayed resilience and courage – inspiring others to do the same”.
Ms Potter’s nomination, detailed her ambition to create a safe place for children and families to be included, accepted nurtured and empowered to be a part of the wider Canberra community.
In her own experience, Ms Potter’s oldest son lives with Aspergers Syndrome and her middle son has Autism and a rare genetic disorder.
In 2007, she launched Learning Ways, an organisation that provides assistance and support to children up to 16 years old with disabilities and their families.
By using her own experience in community development and inclusive education along with the assistance of professional therapists and teachers, Ms Potter develops programs and resources for the organisation.
Learning Ways is currently working with 60 local children and their families.
