New blood system flows

BLOODNET, the first national online system for ordering blood, was launched in Canberra today.

Canberra Hospital, Calvary Hospital, Capital Pathology and Healthscope Pathology will begin using the free system this week.

“BloodNet provides ACT Hospitals with a standardised electronic platform that enhances the visibility and transparency of online blood ordering and receipting systems,” Chief Minister and Minister for Health Katy Gallagher said.

“The system will provide laboratory staff with additional reporting capabilities and significant efficiencies in regards to tracking and tracing blood product orders placed with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service.

“This new system has received enormous national recognition as a successful stand alone, web based system, capable of independently tracking in real time all blood product orders.

“BloodNet provides a safer and more reliable system when compared with manual ordering methods still used by hospitals.”
