Obama to address parliament

US President Barack Obama has accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Julia Gillard to address the Federal Parliament when he visits Canberra during his Australian trip on November 16-17.

President Obama confirmed last month he would visit the country as part of the 60th anniversary of the ANZUS alliance – a critical part of the security of the Asia-Pacific region. His Australian trip will  follow the APEC Leaders Meeting, which he will host in Hawaii.

In a release from the White House last month, officials said the APEC meeting, “will provide the two leaders an opportunity to build on the APEC agenda and expand bilateral cooperation to increase global economic growth, trade and jobs.”

President Obama will also visit Darwin during his Australia trip.

After his Australian visit he will take part in the East Asia Summit to be held in Bali, Indonesia.

“The President looks forward to consulting closely with the Prime Minister on global and regional issues in preparation for the East Asia Summit to be held later that week in Bali, Indonesia,” last month’s statement said.
