October: All politics, large and small

TECHNICALLY, the ACT’s next election is one year away.

On the announcement of the new electoral boundaries, Political Commentator Michael Moore sees an outside chance for the Liberals to win government.

The ACT has lost a chance to share the $150 worth of Regional Development Australia Fund from the Federal Government, which Liberal ACT senator Gary Humphries calls “a disgrace”. The funding knockout confirms his view that Federal Labor takes Canberra for granted.

We need a new Lodge for the Prime Minister, as columnist Don Aitkin suggests on the discovery that the current occupants have to leave the premises because of some lengthy and expensive renovation. He reflects on the great political difficulty in doing anything really sensible about the place.

In this small political town, we may all need some political fun. Ever imagine a circus promising a cast of Kevin Rudd, Bob Brown or Julia Gillard? The Wharf Revue, is heading to Canberra performing “Debt Defying Acts!”, their take on the political and financial crises that beset Australia.

Make fun, not war. Former Canberra artist Kabir Mokamel sends us a series of photos from Afghanistan, showing large billboards he designed with a positive take on the future of the land of his birth, a future of love not hate.

Another immigrant artist, grateful for the opportunity to be an Australian, wants to present his painting “Tribute to the Queen” to the monarch while she is visiting Australia.
