Queanbeyan River’s future

By Rafiqa Fattah

QUEANBEYAN City Council today revealed their strategy to protect the Queanbeyan River and the animals that live in it.

The draft for the Queanbeyan River Corridor Plan of Management is now on public exhibition and not only incorporates the Platypus Awareness and Conservation Strategy but lists recommended actions relating to water quality, amenity, infrastructure and biodiversity.

“This is an important document on the future of the River and feedback from interested members of the community could raise some issues which need to be addressed and incorporated into the plan,” Queanbeyan Mayor Tim Overall said.

“There are some significant issues addressed in the plan including future development of walking paths and land along the river, constructing viewing platforms and an esplanade, installing signage, establishing more intense buffer zones of native vegetation to provide protection to the banks of the River; installing rubbish bins and improving stormwater quality, just to name a few.”

The current Queanbeyan River Plan is more than 10 years old. The draft provides a vision for the the river corridor to be achieved by 2030.

A public meeting to discuss the Australian Platypus Conservancy will be held at the Harry Hesse Room, RB Smith Community Centre at 6pm on Thursday November 17.
