Royal barge arrives quietly

The Royal barge was this morning lowered into Lake Burley Griffin.

FAR from the madding crowd, in sunny Yarralumla this morning, a giant crane gently hoisted the Queen’s barge from a truck, high into the air and then slipping it faultlessly into the still waters of Lake Burley Griffin.

The eyes of the city, the country and the world will be on the barge when it carries the Queen and Prince Philip from Government House in Yarralumla to the Floriade site in Commonwealth Park on Thursday morning.

The best vantage points to see the Queen as she travels along the lake will be at Weston Park, Black Mountain Peninsular and the shoreline from Lennox Gardens to Commonwealth Place in front of the National Library and Questacon.

Canberrans are urged to be in position by at least 10.30am. The Commonwealth Park/Floriade area, including car parks, will remain closed to the public on Thursday.

There will be another chance to see the Queen on Tuesday October 25 when she visits the National War Memorial.

What an obscene waste of tax payers’ money — especially considering it’s only a 5 min drive and we already pay for a Royal Rolls (and driver).
