Russell overpass opens

THE $26.6m Kings Avenue overpass in Russell was officially opened this morning.

The construction of the single bridge overpass began in September 2009, replacing the Russell roundabout, which had recorded the highest number of accidents of any intersection in the ACT with an average of two accidents each week.

The overpass was also to help with traffic congestion caused by new construction in the area including the new ASIO building.

Work to the intersection included Parkes Way being lowered and a bridge carrying Kings Avenue over Parkes Way  through to the Russell Defence precinct.

The project was expected to be complete mid-2011.
