Segways get a start

THE ACT Government has applied an exemption that allows segways to be used around Lake Burley Griffin during Floriade.

The decision follows the recent establishment of a segway hire business and its subsequent closure last month. Since the closure, a number of business operators have approached the ACT Government in relation to segway hire operation in the ACT.

Attorney General Simon Corbell has now requested a review into segway use in the ACT.

“Until the review is completed, I am unable to say whether segways are here to stay in Canberra,” Mr Corbell said.

“However, I am aware that segways have attracted a lot of interest in the Canberra community recently and I am pleased that, although only in a limited area around the lake, both locals and visitors will be able to enjoy this new mode of ‘transport’ whilst the review is completed.”

The exemption started on September 17 and will run until June 30, 2012. If the review finds segways should not be used in the ACT, the exemption will not be extended.
