Starting the charge…

CANBERRA’S electric car network is one step closer with the announcement of 12 foundation members who will provide and operate public access charge spots at prominent locations.

The announcement follows a recently signed purchase agreement between Better Place and one of the foundation members, ActewAGL, to purchase 100 per cent renewable energy for the electric car charge network, worth $60m over 10 years.

ActewAGL CEO Michael Costello said ActewAGL is actively working with Better Place in planning the deployment of Canberra’s electric vehicle network.

“We’ve partnered with Better Place because we want to see Canberra leading Australia’s transition towards the adoption of electric vehicles and sustainable transport,” he said.

“ActewAGL is actively working on a number of environmental intitiative to help Canberra and the region to reduce its impact on the environment.

“As a provider of energy and other essential services, sustainable business practices are critical to ActewAGL’s  thinking.”

The roll-out will begin towards the end of 2011, with the Renault Fluence Z.E. cars due to arrive for the first Canberra customers in the middle of 2012.
Canberra is the starting point for Better Place’s national electric car network.

The other foundation members are: the ACT Government, the ACT Electric Vehicle Council, Canberra Airport, Capital Hotel Group, CIC Australia, Crowne Plaza, Hindmash, Lend Lease, the National Convention Centre, Rock Development Group and TransACT.
