Regular readers will be aware of this paper’s crusading passion for public signage and over recent months we have had a continuous giggle at some of the silly, old, outdated and downright dopey signs around the town.

Our campaign culminated on April 21 with a wonderful story about tourist signs that were so hopelessly out of date they still pointed visitors to places that had long passed into the town’s history (eg Mugga Lane Zoo).

But now sign-sensitive snapper Silas Brown got a picture of a flashy, new, ungraffitied sign down by Lake Burley Griffin the other day.
Are we getting through? Are the bureaucrats rising to our incessant challenge? Not quite.

A straight-faced spokeswoman for TAMS says the new sign is part  of the “Lake Directional Signage” project, which has been in design/development for about 18 months and includes the ultimate installation of more than 100 signs around Lake Burley Griffin, Lake Tuggeranong, Lake Ginninderra and Yerrabi Pond.

“These signs at Lake Burley Griffin replace some of the older and redundant signage which has been installed around the lake over the last 20-30 years,” she says.

“It is an initiative to encourage Canberrans and tourists to walk or cycle around our waterways.

“The signs include information relating to time and distance to a number of nearby attractions as well as providing information about the local heritage and environment. “

She says the project also includes another “CityNews” obsession, the installation of drinking fountains and seats at some of the locations.
