Ridge alive to the sound of music

It’s much better if you can get there in person, but one of the liveliest New Year music festivals within striking distance of Canberra, the Peats Ridge Sustainable Arts and Music Festival, is broadcasting its entire three-day event free over the internet.

Music lovers can now access www.youtube.com/peatsridge to check out the acts in real time during the festival, which runs from Thursday to Sunday, December 29-January 1. The site goes live from Thursday, December 19 with tidbits, teasers and artist clips to check out ahead or the main event.

The live stream is powered by Nissan LEAF, the new electric car with zero petrol and zero emissions, “a natural fit for the environmentally minded festival,” the organisers say.

Festival director Matt Grant sees it as a huge leap forward for Australian festivals.

“We want all those people who haven’t yet been to Peats Ridge to join us from the bus, the lounge, from a mate’s – wherever they are and from whatever phone, tablet or computer they have nearest… we’ll also be talking to everyone’s favourite bands, performers and capturing the thoughts and feelings of our festival family.”

The event, now in its eighth year, will have eight stages packed with music and other artistic performances and shows.”

With 140 acts including favour of the moment Gotye (playing at New Year’s Eve on midnight), funk and folk legend Xavier Rudd, indie foursome The Holidays, house group, The Stanton Warriors, The Dum Dum Girls, and Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro, it is staged along the riverbank at Glenworth Valley, an hour’s drive from Sydney and a favourite spot for campers.

Peats Ridge Festival also hosts art installations, kooky themed venues, multimedia, theatre, dance, cabaret, comedy and a giant trapeze, all winding along the riverbank. There’s also a full children’s program and family camping facilities.

Peats Ridge Sustainable Arts and Music Festival, December 29 – January 1. Glenworth Valley.  All season passes include camping and Festival entry. Bookings to www.peatsridgefestival.com.au or via www.oztix.com.au
