The event, one of few appearances the Australian-born princess was making in Canberra, saw her greet fans and, together with the Prince, plant an Acer campestre, more commonly known as a Field Maple – a native tree to Denmark.

Canberran Kylie Minogue, who was interviewed on national breakfast TV about winning her place at the event, was instantly recognised by Princess Mary.

“She said she recognised me from watching TV that morning,” she said. “It was a nice surprise.”

Dane Bjorn Nielson, who now lives in Canberra, grabbed the attention of Prince Frederik by yelling out: “Welcome back to Australia” in Danish.

“Everyone seemed to be ignoring Frederik,” he said.

“He was being a good husband, dutifully holding the umbrella for his wife.”

Teenager Natalia Nuutinen came along with her mum, who entered their names into the ballot.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Natalia said.

The lucky 500, won their spot via a ballot which attracted the interest of 3000 people.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said the level of national and international media interest in the tree planting by the royal couple would provide significant exposure for Canberra and the Arboretum around the globe.
