Woden cafe goes musical

Sam McLaren and Tom Hamers-Smith will perform at A Bite to Eat.

WHEN you think of homemade jam, you generally think of something to eat, but that’s not how Woden’s popular café, A Bite to Eat,  is thinking at all.

In the lead-up to the Woden Valley Festival, the café will be presenting a musical contest called “Homemade Jam”, showcasing up-and-coming singer-songwriters in Canberra, as part of Woden Alive 2011.

The winner will go on to perform at the festival, which attracted a crowd of over 5,000 people last year.

A Bite to Eat, hidden away in the Chifley shops, has achieved a cult following over the past few  years, doubling in size. If you haven’t been there, it has a unique atmosphere because it’s filled with retro furniture.

Popular enough by day, it turns into a more upbeat restaurant and bar by night.

Woden Alive organiser Ben Trudinger is keen to talk up the way local cafes and restaurants can reignite interest and activity in local shopping centres the way the café, now under new ownership, has done, turning itself into a live music venue with regular Sunday night programs showcasing Canberra musical talent.

Mr Trudinger says “people in the Woden Valley make a great audience, so there is a really exciting opportunity for artists to take part in Homemade Jam and use it as a springboard to get their name out into the community,” and adds, “we’re looking to find what’s different in Woden, things you wouldn’t find anywhere else.”

A Bite to Eat at Shop 8 Eggleston Cres, Chifley will host “Homemade Jam” from 5pm-10pm with performances between 6pm and 9pm on Wednesday November 2 during Woden Alive. The winner will perform at the Woden Valley Festival on Saturday November 5.
