Zelig’s toys for boys (and girls)

CANBERRA artist Barak Zelig obviously has a few ideas about boys (and girls, these days) with toys, if his surreal art exhibition, “Retro-morphosis” at the Australian Defence Force Academy is anything to go by.

Zelig is known for his drawings, etchings, screen-printing, lithographs and paintings that deal with environmental destruction in our region, and as a top drawing teacher.

In this show, which includes 20 lithographs, he turns the spotlight on his use of metamorphosis to illustrate human animalistic, mechanical behaviour.

Among the early works on display is the complete series of “War Toys” artworks that depict the transformation of animals into military machines and question the “dangerous fascination” that adults and children have with war as illustrated by their toys.

“Retro-morphosis”, at the Australian Defence Force Academy Library, Northcott Drive, Monday-Friday 9am-5pm, until Friday, December, 16.
