604 drunks caught driving this year

POLICE have caught 119 drink-drivers from 10,937 random roadside breath tests in June, the highest number of drink-drivers caught in any month this year.

The highest reading last month was recorded on June 15, by a 51-year-old Watson man, who was stopped by police on Hibberson Street,  Gungahlin for not wearing a seat belt. The man was taken to Gungahlin Police Station, where he returned a positive reading of 0.331, more than six times the legal limit. He will face the Magistrates Court next month.

Over the past six months, police have conducted 42,955 random roadside breath tests, with 604 drivers returning positive readings.

Superintendent Kylie Flower, of Traffic Operations, said: “It is alarming to police that more than 600 drivers have been caught drink-driving this year, with 119 of those caught over the past 30 days. We will continue to target drink-driving this year, and if you drink and drive, expect to get caught”.

Police will target speeding motorists during July.
