CANBERRA Theatre patrons are bound to get a shock when they turn up for the last show in Canberra Theatre Centre’s Collected Works 2012 season–Ralph Myers’ production of Noël Coward’s classic play “Private Lives”.
This afternoon on stage, media were treated to a screaming match of no ordinary proportions, with LPs aimed by Zahra Newman (Amanda) at Toby Schmitz, (Elyot) who cowered under the sheets.
It’s not your usual Coward– affected English accents, black tie, cocktails, but it’s just as funny.
Here’s the plot. Amanda has just married Victor and gone on her honeymoon. Elyot has just married Sybil and gone on his honeymoon, to the same hotel in the South of France. Elyot and Amanda spend much of the night finding out all over again why they got divorced in the first place.
Belvoir’s “Private Lives” at The Playhouse from November 21-24, booking to 6275 2700 or canberratheatrecentre.com.au
