ACT schools make the grade

ACT students are the highest performers in the country for reading and numeracy from Years 3 to 9, a COAG Reform Council report issued today shows.

The report also showed the capital has the highest number of young people with a formal qualification and working towards a qualification.

ACT Minister for Education Joy Burch says the results reflect the “comprehensive supports available to students.”

“For example, all colleges have moving forward officers who assist students with the transition into and out of the college sector and work to improve students’ access to further education, training or employment,” she says.

Meanwhile, another COAG Reform Council report issued today, Skills and Workforce Development 2011: Comparing performance across Australia, shows the ACT has the highest number of people across Australia aged 20 to 64 with a formal qualification and working towards a qualification at 65.9 per cent, compared with 55.3 per cent nationally.

“We also have the highest proportion of VET graduates who either gained employment or a promotion at 68.5 per cent compared with the national average of 62.2 per cent,” Burch says.

“In addition, the ACT has the highest number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait students with a VET qualification at 23.2 percent, up from 16.3 in 2007.”
