Archer wins lifetime achievement award

CENTENARY of Canberra creative director Robyn Archer has won the prestigious South Australian Premier’s Award for Lifetime Achievement at the Ruby Awards in Adelaide last night.

Robyn Archer.
The Ruby Awards are South Australia’s premier arts and cultural awards and celebrate outstanding contributions to the state’s cultural life.

Archer, who was born and raised in Adelaide, was unable to attend the gala ceremony to accept her award due to international work commitments on behalf of the Canberra Centenary in the United Kingdom.

Archer also became the first woman to deliver the Arthur Boyd Lecture at Australia House in London last night, and at the same time launched the Centenary of Canberra program in London.

Speaking to a packed audience at Australia House at the invitation of Australia’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ms Archer said any time would be a good time to visit Canberra in 2013.

”It’s an invitation to re-visit the capital and the ‘idea’ of the capital, and to drink deep of the aspirations of its founders,” she says.

Archer says since taking on the Creative Director’s role three years ago, she was determined that the centenary should not be a celebration for the citizens of Canberra only, and that the occasion should shine a light on the “real” Canberra.

“My intention was always to ensure that the celebrations be as much about the present and future of the capital and its status and meaning in the minds of all Australians, as about its noble history,” she says.

“It was always important to me that the celebrations next year not just be rooted in the past, but may manifest the city’s current energies, and also look to its future.”
