IT’S been a joyous week for the Queanbeyan Art Society with its annual charity art show running right in the middle of Civic.
The society’s president, Barry Cranston, managed to talk the Army into donating a long arcade-like tent stretching up Civic Square from the fountain and housing an impressive 300 paintings, dominated this year by landscapes.
According to committee member and painter Pam Padovan, last year they’d raised about $4,000 and this year they hope to raise $6,000 to go to Rotary. She said the show would continue until Sunday at around 2pm, when artists have been asked to come to collect their paintings.
Padovan had also been doing some plein air painting, and said the annual exhibition was a sheer pleasure, except for the task of closing down the tents each day.
On hand was veteran Canberra artist Nik Rajic, hard at work on one of his famous textured tree trunk paintings, which have proved very popular with local buyers.
Rajic was one of several artists (the others were Belinda Ingram, Beth Monaghan and Jacqui King) designated “guest artists” for the year.
Queanbeyan Art Society Rotary Art Show, near the fountain, City Walk, until October 7. Free entry.
