Art in Tanja – almost Canberra

AT this time of the year, “The Coast” can almost be considered to be Canberra. As well, the Tanja area, near Bermagui, is an absolute hub for former or part-time Canberra and regional arts practitioners.

Karen O’Clery’s Narek Galleries, which long ago relocated from the ACT to a beautifully restored former church at the coast, is a central point in this activity, retaining a strong focus on Canberra artists. Right now, for instance, “Short Stories” by Canberra’s Annie Franklin is showing until December 31.

From January 4, Narek will be exhibiting ceramics by Central Western NSW artist Ros Auld, whose primary source of inspiration is the landscape.

According to O’Clery, who should know: “Living and working in a rural situation allows an artist to become attuned to landscape with a heightened sensitivity, to experience the seasons, changes and weather patterns.”

Recently, she says, Auld has been combining metal and clay to create expressive sculptural works with unexpected rhythms that invite the viewer to explore the shapes and surfaces.

The exhibition opens in the New Year and there will be drinks with the artist on Saturday, January 5, from 6pm, to which all are welcome.

“Unearthed – new ceramics and ceramics + metal by Ros Auld”, at The Old Tanja Church, 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Road Tanja , 10.30am to 5.30pm, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday – and by appointment call 6494 0112), January 4 to February 18.
