Queanbeyan shows its ‘hidden’ art
HOW many people know that Queanbeyan City Council holds a collection of over 60 artworks, many by local artists?
Some works in the collection are those acquired through the Queanbeyan Art Society’s annual art prize, which has been sponsored by Council since 1975. Other artworks have been acquired by or gifted to Council.
Now for the first time, a large selection of these artworks have been brought out from behind closed doors and are hanging in a special exhibition at “The Q”. It’s a chance for the community to enjoy artworks normally seen only by Council members and people attending meetings.
There is something to celebrate in the fact that many of the artworks have been produced by members of the Queanbeyan community and focus on impressions of historical buildings in town and scenes of nature from not far away.
The exhibition is open to the public this week in The Q Exhibition Space, Lowe Street, and Queanbeyan (behind the Bicentennial Centre) from 10am—4pm until Friday, February 3.
Yes I have noticed the wonderful Art Displayed in the Queanbeyan City Council. Beautiful collection. The local talent in Queanbeyan is astounding! And so wonderful that the QCC supports such talent.
I visited a local gallery yesterday in Aurora Avenue. A most unlikely spot to find such exquisite local talent. The artist exhibiting there has a marvellous depth of expression and colour. Her energy just bursts from the canvas with such musicianship and flow. I became quite excited as I moved from piece to piece throughout the gallery. I think the exhibition is running for another week, and I thoroughly recommend dropping in. The Gallery Curator was so charming and welcoming… even offered me a cup of coffee while I viewed.
Yes, Queanbeyan artists and Galleries are definately worth the trip…. So often overlooked amongst the larger more flashy galleries of Canberra.
