Arts in the city: David’s wooden alter-ego

• DO you find ventriloquists dummies terrifying? Well, prepare to be terrified when puppet master David Strassman returns to the Canberra Theatre soon with “Careful What You Wish For,” starring his vicious alter-ego, “Chuck Wood”. At The Playhouse, February 28 to March 4. Bookings to 6275 2700.

• THIS year’s 10th Australian Performing Arts Market has more than 610 delegates soon arriving in Adelaide from 29 countries. The market began in Canberra during the now defunct National Festival of Australian Theatre, after which Adelaide was quick to snaffle it up.

• FOUR of our top authors, Roger McDonald, Marion Halligan, Irma Gold and Nigel Featherstone, will be reading selections from their latest works at Electric Shadows Bookshop, 2/40 Mort Street, Braddon, 6pm, February 28. Free, but phone 6248 8352.

• THOSE whiz kids of the Australian unscripted theatre scene, Impro ACT, are realising director Nick Byrne’s dream of performing a unique play each night with “Crescendo”, where 10 musical performers create a piece of musical theatre onstage. Audiences will create the name of the band and the song titles during interval. At The Street Theatre, March 1-10. Lyndsay Hailey, from Chicago’s Second City Company, appears March 2-3. • TUGGERANONG Arts Centre is hopping with paintings by Caroline Deeble, photographs by Michelle McAulay (until February 27 under the title “Ocean & Earth”), Stopera’s celebration of “Enchanting Operetta” (3pm, March 4) and Grace Costa’s photographic essay of rodeos from Queanbeyan and surrounding regions (March 1-20), during the official opening of which, at 5pm on March 3, a silent auction will be held to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. • MUSICIAN-director Dianna Nixon is assembling the Canberra chorus for Melbourne Opera’s “Carmen” at the Canberra Theatre on May 12. They need adult singers and a children’s chorus of 15 voices. Inquiries to wildvoices@bigpond.com

•  GEORGE Huitker and Junk Sculpture are out to celebrate the work of Bruce Springsteen with a “Summer Springsteen Festival”. Director Huitker calls it “musically authentic, robust and intelligent”. At Teatro Vivaldi, ANU Arts Centre, 7.30pm, March 3, bookings to 6257 2718 and at Teatro Fellini Café, National Film & Sound Archive, 1pm, March 4.
