Barr lauds retail sales burst

TREASURER Andrew Barr, pictured, has welcomed the Commonwealth Bank’s latest Business Sales Indicator showing the ACT as having recorded the country’s strongest growth in retail sales in June, with sales up 2.1 per cent, followed by SA and WA (both up 1.2 per cent).

“And in annual growth, the ACT had the second strongest growth in the country, with sales rising 12.5 per cent in the past year, behind only SA (up 14.7 per cent),” Mr Barr said.

“These figures demonstrate that consumer confidence in the ACT is robust, and that the ACT economy is strong. As well as strong consumer spending the ACT has the nation’s lowest unemployment rate, a triple-A credit rating and strong population growth.”
