Better bus access for the disabled

CANBERRA’S public transport accessibility will be greatly improved for people with disabilities with the announcement of 300 bus stops to be upgraded.

The first 75 bus stops, on rapid public transport corridors, have already been upgraded to meet the requirements of the “Disability Discrimination Act”.

Upgrades include enlarging concrete waiting areas to cover a space of 3m by 5m where possible, connecting footpaths to assist wheelchair access and tactile ground surface indicators installed to assist the visually impaired.

“This program of works to improve bus stops throughout Canberra will see seniors and people with disabilities benefit from upgrades to existing transport infrastructure,” Chief Minister and Minister for Municipal Services Katy Gallagher said.

“The first 75 bus stops to be upgraded have focused on the rapid public transport corridors where patronage is high.”

The Chief Minister said the bus stop improvements complement the $75.5 million fleet replacement program “which will see ACTION meet its interim 2012 “Disability Discrimination Act” requirements”.
