Big win for Canberra City Bands

IT was a big win for Canberra City Bands, who took out two of the three Open Concert Band sections of the Australian National Eisteddfod held in Llewellyn Hall on May 25.

Canberra City Band took out the Open A Grade section and the John Agnew Band from the same organisation won the Open C Grade Section, while South Canberra Youth Wind Orchestra won the Open B Grade section.

In the Open Jazz Bands the Twilight Jazz Band won Open A Grade and Daramalan College B Grade. Hall Village Brass Band won the Open Brass Bands, with Canberra Youth Philharmonic Orchestra winning Open Orchestras.

All sections for youth groups were run on a non-competitive basis, so each participating band or orchestra was awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal.

For adjudicator Lindsay Frost it was familiar territory. Frost, director of Bands at Epping Boys High School in Sydney since 2001, was involved in Canberra school and community groups as a child, so was keen to offer encouragement to today’s budding musicians.
