I WAS recently complaining about the Canberra obsession with the surf. Now my attention has been caught by a related obsession with boats that seems to have taken over the local arts scene.
There’s the National Museum’s “Silk Route” exhibition, which extends the idea to the seafaring routes and has part of an Arabian Dhow on display.
Then there’s Supa Productions’ coming show “Titanic the musical”, where most of the stage will be taken up by a gargantuan boat.
And now, Ickle Pickle Productions’ Justin Watson has just called in to tell us of their coming holiday kids’ show, “Sinbad The Sailor”.
According to Watson, the script is a grand collaboration by Peter MacDonald, Rachel Foke, Watson himself and the whole cast.
They are busy working hard with the silly plot, which partly involves Sinbad’s mates Whyalla, Handsome Jack and Mellow Stan, getting waylaid by what Watson calls “a splash of mermaids”.
There’s the evil Sultan Vinaga trying to prevent Sinbad from finding the treasure, there’s music billed as “suitable for all ages”, and there are beggars, carpet sellers and all the necessities of an Arabian Nights story.
But above all, there’s the boat, for as we all know, Sinbad was a sailor. Designer Wayne Shepherd is busy knocking up a Dhow intended to occupy most of the stage. A Titanic Dhow, you could say.
“Sinbad The Sailor” first runs at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, April 17-21, bookings to 6293 1443, then moves to Belconnen Theatre, April 23-28, bookings to 6262 6977.
