Book celebrates Wesley Centre’s first decade

Music director and author Garth Mansfield
Today an anniversary book was launched celebrating 10 years of the Wesley Music Centre in Forrest.

The book of 140 pages is the story of a great diversity of events at the centre since it was opened on September 8, 2002. The publication is illustrated with photos of performers, concertgoers and others involved in activities at the centre.

The main author of the publication is Garth Mansfield, director of the centre from the outset, with design and much of the photography by Sabine Friedrich.

There have been around 1000 public events including concerts, master classes, seminars and lectures as well as thousands of behind-the-scenes activities such as recordings, teaching, courses, private studio concerts, rehearsals and music examinations.

The book details landmark events and also contains chapters on different genres of music, including music for the piano and ancestors of the piano, for violin, viola and cello, for mixed ensembles, woodwinds and other instruments, for solo voice, for choirs and congregations, for guitar and for pipe organ.

It describes the 200 Wednesday concerts since 2008 and the 20 Wesley Scholars’ Concerts from 2002.

There is a chapter on the University of the Third Age (U3A) courses, lectures and recordings sessions held, as well as a summary of an acoustic assessment report on the Music Room of the Centre.

Throughout the book there are numerous vignettes by performers and others, with personal reflections on the centre.

The book is available from Wesley Music Centre Office from Tuesday to Friday (10am to 3pm) and at Wesley Music Foundation events. The cost is $5 (cash or cheque only). Postage in an A5 envelope is $1.80 withinAustralia. Inquiries to 6232 7248.
