Budget promises second point to point camera

THE Federal Budget has provided funding for the second location for point to point speed cameras at Athllon Drive, between Drakeford Drive and Beasley Street..

Executive director Transport Policy and Regulation, Karen Greenland said tenders for the work will soon be called for.

“Point to point cameras installed on Hindmarsh Drive commenced operation in February and we expect cameras to be installed at the second site later this year,” Ms Greenland said.

“The ACT Road Safety Strategy 2011?2020 identifies achieving safe speeds as essential to achieving improved road safety outcomes.

“There is a solid research base which shows that point?to?point cameras, which are in use overseas and some other Australian jurisdictions, reduce the incidence of speeding and crash rates in the locations where the cameras are used.”

The identification of location for point to point camers is based on road safety and traffic factors.

According to an ACT Forward Design Study, released in September 2010, confirmed that point to point systems are effective in reducing the number and severity of crashes, and are able to improve speed compliance within the enforced area.

This is despite infringement rates typically being lower than for sites where fixed cameras are used.

“Following the Forward Design Study, more detailed data analysis and ranking of sites was undertaken and based on a 50:50 weighting of safety and traffic factors Athllon Drive has been identified as the next available site,” Ms Greenland said.

“During the five years 2006 to 2010 there were 246 crashes on this section of road, including 24 injury crashes and one fatal crash.”
