Budget watch: Inner-north gets dog park

CANBERRA’S off-leash dog parks get a Budget boost, with the inner north getting a new park and Belconnen an upgrade.

The $470,000 investment includes $60,000 in the 2012-13 budget to design the new inner north dog park, that is expected to be constructed in 2013-14 for $240,000.

Belconnen dog park, near Lake Ginninderra, will receive a $170,000 to add a small dog exercise yard, to prevent potential problems and a new parking area.

Chief Minister and Minister for Territory and Municipal Services Katy Gallagher said there will be an investigation into where the new inner north dog park will be located.

“The site will also need to provide an opportunity for parking, shade and interesting terrain for dogs and their owners to enjoy,” she said.

“There are currently five off-leash dog parks in Canberra – Belconnen, Casey, Forde, Tuggeranong and Yarralumla – which have all proven to be very popular places for residents to take their dogs to exercise and socialise.”

Pity the Romans weren’t rebuilding the hospital

"The ACT Labor government has already served more than 21 years. It's highly unlikely that historians and archaeologists in another two millennia will be digging up the hospital and looking in wonder," writes columnist MICHAEL MOORE.
