Camels and carols for a Canberra Christmas

IT’S not every day you see camels wandering around Garema Place – but this year, it’s all part of Christmas in Canberra.

Camel rides, rock climbing, bungee runs, trampolines, bumper boats and water balls are among the many festivities planned in Civic for Christmas Carnival in the City, which officially kicks off today.

All rides are free of charge and spread across Garema Place, Civic Square, Ainslie Place and City Walk.

Canberra CBD Limited CEO Stephen Gregory says he brought the carnival to town to encourage people to come into the city and “have some fun in the lead up to Christmas.”

“We wanted to do something different from the stock standard Christmas celebration,” he says.

“We thought if we’re trying to encourage people to come to the city in Christmas time, what better way than to have a carnival in the city. It’s enlivening the whole of the retail precinct in the city centre…camels aren’t something you see every day.”

School and community choirs will also be participating in the festivities with carol performances and Christmas tunes held each night between 6 and 7pm. A Town Crier will be spreading Christmas cheer between 6pm–7pm weekdays and 10am–2.30pm on the weekend.

The carnival will operate from 12pm until 8pm for 12 days, finishing on Friday December 21.
