Canberra leads the way in e-waste

CANBERRA is the first in the country to use a new national recycling scheme that will allow residents to ditch their unwanted televisions and computers for free.

The capital is the start of nation wide roll-out part of an initiative from the Federal Government’s Product Stewardship legislation.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said the implementation of the scheme was an example of Canberra continuing to lead the way in recycling and waste management.

“We also expect to see the free scheme have a major impact on illegal dumping in the ACT,” she said.

Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, Senator Don Farrell said the services will boost television and computer recycling rates to 30 per cent in 2012-23 and 80 per cent by 2021-22.

The services, provided by DHL Supply Chain, will begin on May 15 and will operate from the Mugga Lane and Mitchell Transfer Stations.

The service is available for the disposal of televisions, computers, and computer products such as printers, keyboards, mice and hard drives, but does not cover other electronic waste, such as mobile phones.

Of course a FREE scheme would have an impact on the illegal dumping of televisions, computers etc. That is no news to most Canberrans. Expecting people to participate in re-cycling & waste management programs and then charging them to do so was always doing to be a failure. Some people will do the right things but unfortunately most will take the cheapest and easiest way out. It’s good to see the ACT Government now understands this. Next they should provide Canberra residents with ‘green waste bins’ like they have in some of the other States.

It is only common sense to provide green waste bins to avoid illegal dumping and littering a free service should be provided to all householders. The expense of disposing of illegal dumping for the ACT gov and the cost of cleaning up after must be extremely expensive. If there was a service provided surely it would be produce a cleaner Canberra environment.
