Canberrans still highly educated, car-lovers: Census

NEW statistics from the 2011 census show Canberra remains a highly educated, car-dominated city.

Census data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed a sharp rise in the number of ACT residents completing post-graduate degrees in 2011, jumping from about 17,000 in 2006 to 26,000.

Society and culture and management and commerce were the most common areas studied, with the number of students taking engineering and related technology courses showing a continued decline.

Almost 30 per cent of Canberrans were in professional occupations, compared to 21 per cent of Australians overall.

Transport figures revealed 70 per cent of people travelled to work by car, with the proportion of people using the bus down from 5.8 per cent to 5.6 per cent.

But the survey also showed an increase in the number of people walking or riding a bicycle work.
