Civic ice rink keeps its cool

THE month-long, open-air ice rink  in Garema Place will close on Sunday.

Skate in the City organisers says crowd numbers have been on par with last year’s successful debut.

“So far the numbers have been similar to the year before, so we look set to return next year if all goes well,” organiser CBD Limited’s chief executive officer Stephen Gregory said.

“Skate in the City provides the people of Canberra and the region an opportunity to get outside and experience a bit of winter fun. The smiles on the children’s faces tell the story.”

This year saw changes to the event first year, with a bigger rink, more lighting and increased public seating.

“The new and improved design, including the designated children’s area, has been popular as have the movie nights, fashion and skate shows and the party lounge,” Mr Gregory said.

Multiculturalism has been on show with a different culture celebrated each Sunday. A celebration of Japanese culture will feature at the final “Cultural Sunday” this weekend.

Skate sessions will run from 10am to 8pm each day this week (the last session will finish at 9.30pm), and there will be a 10pm session on Friday and Saturday night that runs until 11.30pm, with a number of special performances set to light up the ice on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
