‘Cool’ young musicians serenade lunchtime crowd

IF you’re wondering why two enthusiastic groups of boys and girls were singing “Anything you can do I can do better” from “Annie Get your Gun” in the Tuggeranong Hyperdome at lunchtime today, “CityNews” can tell you.

“Anything you can do I can do better”
It was a way of introducing “Globalising Friendship,” a project developed by Tuggeranong Arts Centre, the Embassy of Cuba, Garran Primary School and the Tuggeranong Hyperdome in which 500 children from the school submitted artworks, 250 of which are now on show in Havana. The remaining 250, together with 250 artworks created across Cuba, are  on display around the Tuggeranong Hyperdome until December 14.

The choir, conducted by Garran primary school teacher and choir-mistress, Sally Baker, were later joined by the year for recorder group from the school who performed, among other numbers, “Tie Me Kangaroo Down” under the baton of deputy principal at Garran,  Robert Maccioni.

Ms Baker told “CityNews” that she “couldn’t believe that  110 people turned up at choir this year.”  Especially boys – “it’s seen as a bit cool, standing up at assembly and singing,” she said.

Ambassador of Cuba Pedro Monzón, Chris Peters from the Canberra Business Council and president of the Tuggeranong Festival Michael Linfield, were all on hand to applaud the young performers and the venture, which is  part of the wider Tuggeranong Festival, beginning this weekend with the street party, Primavera.
